Company presentation Designer, manufacturer and installer, Carapax offers metal-textile shelters to protect outdoor spaces for professionals and individuals. Today, François le roux runs the family business which was founded in 1989 by his father, Laurent le roux. With an experience of over 25 years, Carapax has managed to become the reference in terms of coverings in stretched fabric in France and Europe. More than 15,000 shelters have been installed to date. Our secret ? Loyalty to our suppliers who have been following us from the start and the satisfaction of our customers who recommend us. We attach great importance to working with local businesses. CARAPAX offers protection solutions from a partnership with the French manufacturer, Serge Ferrari. World leader in the sector of composite membranes, this PVC fabric is made from products of the Texyloop circle, an initiative of Serge Ferrari: recycling technology for flexible composite materials at the European level. And others, such as the company Sopranzi Galvanising, surface treatment specialists, the companies Moreau and Descours and Cabaud, professionals in building hardware, Hilti, Wurth, … Our metal-textile structures are chosen for their manufacturing quality, technologies and innovations. The advantage of steel in a few words : Steel, a lightweight, durable material and a design that allows lightweight structures and so reduced foundations. resistance to extreme weather thanks to a surface treatment, interior / exterior galvanising. the choice of this material allows the evolution of buildings. it is possible to dismantle a steel building without destroying it, in order to rebuild it elsewhere or in part. its current image is well married to building heritage and is easily integrated with the environment thanks to a powder-coated finish on galvanising (RAL as choice). The resistance to deformation in the sense of the weft is superior to that of conventional textile coatings. This exclusive advantage is very important during the textile tensioning. The Serge Ferrari Précontraint textiles offer an exceptional resistance to stretching due to a very low shrinkage. Thanks to the dual advantage of low shrinkage and the right thread? The Serge Ferrari Précontraint textiles stretch three times less in the direction of the weft than conventional coated textiles. Controlled homogeneity The biaxial tension of the technology ensures strict control of the threads of the weft and a complete respect for the right thread for all production batches. Increased longevity During handling, the lightness of the fabrics is an important criterion for making their preparation and implementation easier. Serge Ferrari Précontraint technology provides this lightness while ensuring a greater coating thickness at the crest of the threads. The polyester framework is therefore better protected against atmospheric attacks. Serge Ferrari has made an inventory of the textile structures in Précontraint membranes installed since 1982, in order to establish a record of strength, durability and safety. This appraisal reveals a durability that is much higher than 20 years, a very favourable environmental behaviour and the sustainability of the fire classification over time according to the original standards. Thanks to a greater coating thickness at the crest of the threads, the Serge Ferrari Précontraint membranes retain their mechanical strength qualities over time, a key factor in the durability of your achievements. Sustainable development and Serge Ferrari® composite membranes Précontraint lifespan Serge Ferrari® Précontraint membranes have a significantly longer life thanks to a «useful» protective layer. In fact, the performance of the mechanical characteristics of a composite membrane over the long term is directly proportional to the thickness of the coating layer at the crest of the threads. For 30 years, Serge Ferrari has been committed to following up structures using his membranes. This background work now makes it possible to be certain about : • The preservation of the aesthetics and especially the conservation of gloss and retention of colour, • High dimensional stability over time. Texyloop certification The company obtained its first ISO 14001 certification in 2003. This standard is based on the principle of continuous improvement in environmental performance by controlling the impacts related to the business of the company. This takes a double commitment of continuous progress and respect for regulatory compliance. It makes it possible to structure well the implementation process of a management system, to ensure traceability and to get the resulting credibility from the certification by an external body. Texyloop recycling A strong and practical initiative, Texyloop. Since April 2003, thanks to the Texyloop process, the Serge Ferrari group receives, identifies, stocks and recycles an increasing quantity of textiles at the end of life and off-cuts. The Serge Ferrari R&D department is behind the Texyloop process, a unique technology of PVC coated textile recycling. The Texyloop process generates polyester fibre and flexible PVC ready for use. The high quality of these materials allows their reuse in many industrial processes. After the launch of an industrial recycling unit, the Group set out to establish a Europe-wide collection network. A specific Internet site (www.texyloop.com) is used to follow progress of this current network in Europe.
Précontraint Architecture textile Architecture textile makes use of flexible membranes allowing great architectural freedom, lower natural lighting and the enhancement of roof surfaces and façades. Natural light and translucency Natural light is inextricably linked to architecture textile: it is one of the main strengths. Comfort of the users Natural lighting largely determines the visual comfort of the users and natural light is a key element of a project: • in a growing number of countries, the amount of natural light is the subject of official recommendations through the regulations. In France, the Labour Code (Article R.235-2) states that buildings must be designed and arranged so that natural light can be used for lighting the places intended for work. Durability The durability of a work means the point of view of its structural integrity and contractual guarantees, but also concerns its aesthetic appearance over time. Mechanical strength The Serge Ferrari® Précontraint membranes have a significantly longer life thanks to an upper protective layer. The permanence in the long term of the mechanical properties of a composite membrane is directly proportional to the thickness of the coating layer at the crest of threads. Close monitoring of certain projects has enabled us to measure the residual tensile strength of membranes after a number of years on-site at different latitudes. Formulation of colours and behaviour over time As illustrated by the prestigious façade of the Puerta America hotel in Madrid, the Serge Ferrari membranes can be manufactured in different colours for individual projects. The careful selection of the best pigments and colorimetric formulations that are optimised for the coating are the guarantees for good colour fastness over time. Lightness and control of shapes The textile membrane is a structural material used for a lightweight architecture that allows all the boldness of lines, sleek curves or minimalist geometry. It is removable, expandable, convertible and recyclable. The double reversed curvature achieves stability without a heavy support structure. These requirements have been made the object of accelerated ageing tests with very distinct UV (4000 hrs) and evaluation according to the standard NF EN ISO 4892-3. Example : Hotel Puerta America (Madrid – SP) After 5 years, the special colours of this realisation have maintained a beautiful appearance that respects the architecture of the building. Dimensional stability The Serge Ferrari® Précontraint membranes allow: • a final installation of the structures: an expensive or complex re-tensioning is no longer necessary, • perfect surfaces and shapes, not subject to deformation, pockets and flapping in the wind, • perfect compliance with the initial calculations and cutting plans. Seismic zone The suppleness of the membranes allows some bending and a certain degree of movement, without damage to the waterproof sealing and the durability of the work. In zones with high seismic risk like Japan, this construction solution has been strongly developed.
What is eco-designed well, is clearly enunciated … In 1998, Serge Ferrari and his partner Solvay created Vinyloop, a recycling process for PVC composites. Two years later, Serge Ferrari created Texyloop, a recycling process applied to composite textiles. Two years later, the firm passed to the industrialisation phase and invested 6 million euros in an industrial unit. Finally, in 2007, Serge Ferrari established a Europe-wide collection network and the symbolic figure of 1,000 tons of composite membranes collected per year has been achieved. This initiative is the culmination of a deep reflection on the technical textile material that has brought into the open its strengths and weaknesses. Lightweight: textile structures use low amounts of resources, the fabric is lightweight, the structures too, and the impact of the implementation is reduced. The realisations are carried out according to the dual principle of the right amount in the right time. Durable: easy to maintain, textile structures are used many times. Adjustable and convertible, they are reused for different applications. Still, it was necessary to come full circle and to act directly on the heart of the matter: the end of life! The landfill, incineration, even worse, the «wild» abandonment or burning out in the open were, it must be admitted, the rule. It is this rule that the Texyloop circle brought into question. Lightweight and durable, composite PVC textiles are now recyclable. Texyloop reconstitutes the resource base at the end of the cycle. Towards a systematic logic … At Serge Ferrari, sustainable development is not a component of the strategy, it is the heart, the engine, the beginning and the end. Recycling is an industrial business included in a systematic loop: «nothing is lost, everything is transformed». Analysis of the cycles of life (ACV) Natural light is inextricably linked to architecture textile: it is one of the main strengths. Solar protection textiles In recent years, solar protection has changed status. Considered to be an accessory, often forgotten upstream from the building, it is now an integral part of the design. Everything has changed: the expectations of the users, the gaze of the architects and the regulatory environment. So in Europe, under the regulations (including the 2012 Thermal Regulation), minimum solar characteristics are required for the bays of all airconditioned buildings or not. The drop in temperature The Soltis textiles can significantly reduce the solar factor. The energy balance sheet and thermal performances: a new tool, Textinergie® The Serge Ferrari group is actively involved in an initiative aiming to enhance the thermal performances of solar protection textiles. Colours Colours have a decisive influence on the thermal and luminous performance of textiles. Optimisation of thermal and luminous contributions • In winter: solar radiation is a source of heating and illumination of natural quality. Its optimisation assumes that it can clear the bay through a system of blinds and that there are not tinted windows. • In summer: it is necessary to control the energy contributions in order to limit the use of air-conditioning, while enjoying the comfort of natural light. The European standard The new IN 14501 standard defines the classifications relating to the degree of thermal and visual performance of solar protection textiles. It enables the comparison of products on the basis of identical references for all European countries. Against the wind, animation Several systems are used to manage the wind factor, which is called the animation of blinds. These systems work with sensors called anemometers which, from a certain wind force: • Automatically take the blinds back up. • Put the fabric in tension with a spring system. Soltis is particularly suitable for these systems and lends itself easily to tensioning. The elongation under load is small and allows the installation of blinds up to 16m2 outside. The animation of a façade also consists of the scheduling of movements, so that lowering blinds at the right time can be anticipated, that is to say before the sun enters the building. What is necessary to remember is that Soltis supports the evolution of canopy architecture that is increasing the size of the glass surfaces of public or service buildings to gain transparency and brightness. Solar protection and sustainable development Energy savings Blinds can limit consumption in air-conditioning. Solar protection is an objective ally of passive buildings. The optimisation of thermal and luminous contributions is the key to quality solar protection. Recyclability All Soltis textiles are recyclable via Texyloop, a process due to the initiative of the Serge Ferrari Group, which has its own European network of collection. The ACV and FDES The Environmental and Health Declaration Sheets (FDES) summarise the life cycle of a product: creation of raw materials, manufacture of the textile, life on the construction site, life on the building, recycling and replacement. These sheets are produced in collaboration with the French Union of Coaters and Laminators (SFEC) and validated by an independent third party. A tool for optimising the thermal and luminous performances : Soltis Roller Disk The Soltis Roller Disk is a tool created to raise awareness and to encourage construction professionals to take into account the thermal and luminous performances of textiles, depending on the chosen colour. With a simple gesture, the tool can assess the thermal and luminous performances of each of the colours according to the classifications established by the IN 14501 standard. The professional is then able to provide advice that is well-founded and suitable for the solar protection needs of the project, depending on the sun exposure and the performance being sought in terms of freshness and luminous ambience. The classification is based on the kinetic energy released by a given size hailstone when it hits a building envelope: the lower class RG 1 includes, for example, items that remain intact under the impact of a hailstone of 10 mm diameter but are damaged by a hailstone of 20 mm. The items only damaged under the effect of a hailstone of 30 mm in diameter are placed in class RG 2, while items of class RG 5 suffer the impact of a hailstone of 50 mm without damage. Thus, the class of hail resistance defines the energy under which the item remains intact. The calculations of masses and speeds assume that the hailstones are spherical and they are ice with a density of 870 kg/m3.
